As of April 2026, China has achieved comprehensive mutual visa exemption for ordinary passports with 29 countries, unilaterally opened short-term visa-free access to 50 countries, and implemented a 240-hour transit visa exemption for 55 countries. In addition, multiple regional facilitation policies such as those for Hainan, cruise ships, and the Pearl River Delta are in place. This article systematically organizes various visa and visa-free policies to help foreign friends plan their trips to China with ease.

I. A Complete Guide to Chinese Visas

1. Common Visa Categories

There are 16 types of ordinary Chinese visas, marked by pinyin letters. The common categories are as follows:

The visa’s validity refers to the date by which the holder must enter China; the duration of stay starts from the day after entry.

2. Application Process (Online)

All visa types now use the “China Online Visa Application” system (https://consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/). The basic steps are as follows:

Prepare documents: Original passport (valid for at least 6 months with at least one blank visa page), one recent color photo with a white background (48mm×33mm).

Fill out the form and upload documents online: Register, select the visa category, fill in all information truthfully, and upload electronic copies of the required documents.

Wait for initial review: Generally takes 1–2 working days. If additional documents are needed, the application will be returned for supplement.

Submit passport: After passing the initial review, print the application form with the barcode and submit the original passport and materials at the embassy/consulate or visa center in person, or through a proxy if you are exempt from fingerprint collection.

Pay fees and collect visa: Collect your visa at the scheduled time with the pickup slip. Standard processing takes the 3rd or 4th working day; express service is available.

Fingerprint exemption: Until December 31, 2026, all short-term visa applicants (stay duration within 180 days) are exempt from fingerprint collection; those under 14 or over 70 are also exempt.

3. Port Visa (Emergency Entry)

If you need to travel to China urgently for humanitarian reasons, emergency business, or emergency engineering repairs and did not have time to obtain a visa at an overseas embassy/consulate, you may apply for a port visa upon arrival. Tourist groups organized by travel agencies can also apply. Port visas are usually processed within 1 working day, granting a single-entry visa with a validity not exceeding 5 days and a stay duration not exceeding 30 days.

5. Visa Extension in China

To extend your stay, you must apply to the exit-entry administration of the public security authority at least 7 days before your current stay expires.

The cumulative extension must not exceed the original duration of stay granted.

III. Detailed Explanation of Visa-Free and Facilitated Entry Policies

(I) Mutual Visa Exemption Agreements (29 Countries)

The following 29 countries have signed comprehensive mutual visa exemption agreements for ordinary passport holders with China. Unless otherwise specified, ordinary passport holders can enter each other’s countries without a visa. As specific stay periods and permitted purposes may vary by country, please check the latest policies before traveling.

(II) Unilateral Visa-Free Policy (50 Countries)

China unilaterally allows ordinary passport holders from the following 50 countries to enter visa-free for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, exchange visits, or transit, with a single stay not exceeding 30 days. Multiple entries are permitted, and there is currently no limit on the number of visa-free entries or total days of stay.

Policy Validity: Brunei has no expiration date; Russia until September 14, 2026; the remaining 48 countries until December 31, 2026.

Work, study, and news reporting are not included in the unilateral visa-free scope; the corresponding visa must be obtained in advance. When entering, it is recommended to carry an invitation letter, flight tickets, and hotel orders for inspection.

(III) Transit Visa Exemption Policies

1. 24-Hour Transit Visa Exemption (for all countries)

All open ports in China provide a 24-hour transit visa exemption for citizens of all countries. During this period, tourism, business, visits, and family visits are permitted.

Eligible Countries (55 countries):

Europe (40 countries): Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Monaco, Russia, United Kingdom, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Belarus, Norway

Americas (6 countries): United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile

Oceania (2 countries): Australia, New Zealand

Asia (7 countries): South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Indonesia

Special Note: If you also qualify for unilateral visa-free access or a mutual visa exemption, the border inspection authorities will automatically apply the most favorable policy based on a “whichever is higher” principle.

(IV) Regional Visa-Free Policies

1. Hainan Visa-Free
Hainan provides visa-free entry for nationals from 86 countries for purposes such as tourism, business, visiting relatives, medical treatment, exhibitions, and sports competitions (excluding work and study), with a stay of up to 30 days limited to the Hainan administrative region. Cruise Ship Visa-Free Entry
Foreign tourist groups of 2 or more people organized by domestic travel agencies can enter visa-free at 13 cruise ports including Tianjin, Shanghai, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Sanya, stay on the cruise to the next port until departure, for a maximum of 15 days.

3. Important Notes

Those who do not qualify for visa-free access must obtain a Chinese visa before travel.

Visa-free entrants must not engage in activities inconsistent with the purpose of entry; work, study, and news reporting require the corresponding visa.

Passports usually need to be valid for at least 6 months and have blank visa pages; the 240-hour transit visa exemption requires a passport valid for at least 3 months.

Duration of stay is calculated from 00:00 on the day following entry. If you need to stay beyond the visa-free period, you should obtain a visa in advance overseas, or apply for a stay permit from the public security authorities after entry in accordance with the law.

China’s visa-free policies update frequently. Be sure to verify the latest information before travel through the China Consular Services website (cs.mfa.gov.cn) or the National Immigration Administration website (nia.gov.cn).

Conclusion

From visas to diverse visa-free options, paths to visit China are now abundant: 50 countries enjoy unilateral visa-free access, 29 countries have mutual visa exemption, citizens of 55 countries can make use of the 240-hour transit visa exemption to explore multiple provinces, and regional policies like Hainan and cruise ship entries add further convenience.
